Morrison Water Services supports the strength of the network in Vale of Glamorgan

21st October 2024

We are currently working with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) to upgrade the water network in Vale of Glamorgan.

As part of the clean water distribution zonal studies, DCWW is investing into their water and sewerage network. A historic network, with some parts over 100 years old, the upgrade is integral to improve the performance of water mains and provide a more reliable water supply for its customers.

DCWW serves three million customers across Wales and Herefordshire, with a network of over 26,500km of water mains. Our team are currently working in both urban and rural areas to support the significant investment around the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our team are using several techniques to minimise disruption to customers’ essential water supply, including ‘no dig’ technology, opencut techniques, slip lining and directions drilling.

Slip lining will be used to push new pipework through the existing pipe, while customers are kept in supply through a temporary pipe, and then reconnected to the main network when the new pipe has been installed.

The team have also utilised the ‘Ice Pigging’ technique, to clean existing pipework when a new water pipe is not required. A slushy ice material is inserted into the main, which cleans the pipework by picking up any sediment or debris that may be in there. This method uses less water than other cleaning techniques and reduces the need for excavation.

Across Morrison Water Services, we are passionate in finding solutions to ensure we deliver sustainable solutions, while minimising disruption for our clients, their customers and the local community.

Beatriz Lopez, Head of Operations for the Water Network Alliance at Morrison Water Services, said: “We are proud to be partnering with DCWW in delivering this critical upgrade to the network in the Vale of Glamorgan.

“Our team is committed to using innovative and sustainable methods, such as ‘no dig’ technology and Ice Pigging, to enhance the performance of the water mains, while minimising disruption to the community. This work will ensure that residents in the Value of Glamorgan continue to benefit from a safe and reliable supply of clean drinking water for years to come.”
