Inspiring the next generation of STEM specialists

12th July 2023

Morrison Water Services (MWS) was delighted to recently take part in inspiring the next generation of Water Industry Specialists at a Smart STEM event for 60 primary school students.

Hosted at Burnley University’s Victoria Campus, Jason Young, MWS’ Regional SHEQ Manager and Candice Smith, SHEQ Advisor, alongside colleagues from United Utilities, enjoyed talking to local pupils aged between 9-10 years old about the importance of water.

The day involved interactive activities including a plumbing demonstration using High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and fittings, giving the pupils a hands-on approach to understanding how water gets to their homes. Working in small teams, pupils enthusiastically engaged in presentations on the processes involved in the treatment and distribution of water for consumption and the treatment of wastewater.

Speaking on the importance on being involved in STEM events, Candice Smith said: “STEM visits boost our engagement with young people and enable us to gain a better understanding of education as well as encouraging students to consider a career with MWS.”

STEM visits are essential for us to excite and engage with the next generation from both inside and outside the classroom. It provides young people with a greater understanding of the pathways available to them, inspiring them to pursue careers with us in the future.
