Morrison Water Services has launched its ‘School of Metering.’

19th January 2024

The Morrison Water Services’ Smart Metering team has worked to create an Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) accredited course, to provide new recruits with the specialist training to undertake smart metering works.

After noticing an opportunity to both attract new recruits and to provide the highest level of training for its operatives, the course was developed directly in conjunction with EUSR. Marking the first of its kind in the UK, the implementation of the course has led EUSR to help build other utility schools across the country.

Delivered by Morrison Water Services’ own training supervisors, who have extensive knowledge and expertise in both domestic and commercial meter installations and exchanges, the course aims to give new, unskilled, as well as trained people the skills they need to meter properties and carry out plumbing.

The operatives learn specific meter installation methods, knowledge of scenarios, specialist use of fittings tailored by people on the contract- who have, in some cases, invented the fittings.

The course includes one-to-one live site training, alongside three days to identify areas where improvements are needed to monitor and understand areas of required improvements. At the end of the course, each student is assessed and must meet certain criteria to pass, ensuring that they have the best training possible.

Morrison Water Services started offering the course in communities where there was a shortage in the recruitment of Smart Metering Operatives, to help deliver its aim to be a local, diverse and inclusive employer.

By implementing this programme, Morrison Water Services can deliver the highest quality Smart Metering works efficiently and cost effectively on behalf of its clients. So far, all 314 members of the Smart Metering installation team have had service leading training to ensure they are fully skilled to install smart meters.

Mark Halpin, Programme Manager at Morrison Water Services, said: “At M Group Services, we are committed to providing training opportunities to attract, develop and retain the next generation of highly skilled, forward-thinking and technically competent people.”
