Morrison Water Services’ use of AVUS recognised at NCE TechFest Awards

14th January 2022

New Civil Engineer's TechFest Awards are a unique forum to discover innovative ideas from across the industry. The awards are a platform to showcase innovations, highlighting the forward-thinking application of digital technology in the infrastructure and buildings sectors.

AVUS (Augmented Visualisation of Underground Services) won the Best Use of Technology: Health, Safety & Wellbeing category; for a collaboration between Morrison Water Services and Eurovia, who developed the technology.

Morrison Water Services has utilised AVUS on its Thames Water and Yorkshire Water contracts and has seen remarkable results from both. The digital technology allowed teams to clearly identify utilities and other assets that lay underground. This allowed them to carefully plan excavations with greater levels of accuracy, with reduced risks to the health and safety of operatives, as well as ensuring high levels of time and cost efficiency.

The teams that utilised AVUS on the Yorkshire Water contract noted how the technology was a great confidence boost. AVUS acted as a visual aid that provided them with a far greater understanding of the underground utility layout.

AVUS has demonstrated great potential in its early phases; the scope and versatility of the technology means it could be used as a support mechanism for design, planning, routing and quality control. By playing an integral role throughout the delivery of a project, AVUS can support both the owners of underground services and those excavating in the public highway, improving and securing the resilience of assets and ensuring the health and safety of those on the ground.

Morrison Water Services is continuously searching for and developing innovative technologies that can drive improvements across all aspects of its work, supporting its people, clients and customers. Identifying and addressing areas of improvement is fundamental to continuing and growing the success of Morrison Water Services’ operations, and the recognition of the collaboration with Eurovia and their AVUS solution at the NCE TechFest Awards outlines this commitment to driving progress.

Andy Carter, Director of IT, Innovation & Improvement, commented: “We are delighted to have been recognised in Eurovia’s submission and subsequent receipt of this award – our collaboration has already resulted in a range of benefits for our people and clients. AVUS is an exciting innovation that has already demonstrated significant improvements in health and safety and accuracy on our Thames Water and Yorkshire Water contracts. We are looking forward to further implementing AVUS throughout Morrison Water Services, tapping into and making the most of the vast potential of the technology.”
