We cycled 80 miles for Water Aid!

13th July 2022

Morrison Water Services were proud sponsors of this year’s Water Cycle challenge, hosted by Yorkshire Water. This event was organised to raise funds for the charity, WaterAid.

WaterAid provide clean water, suitable toilets, and hygiene knowledge across the globe to people who do not yet have access to them. We believe access to clean water and toilets is a basic human right that everyone should have; however, this is not always the case.

Taking part in this challenge was General Manager Ricky Sarginson and Divisional Technical Manager, Andrew Stephenson who chose to cycle 80 miles across Yorkshire’s beautiful countryside, starting at Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club.

Ricky said: “We came, we saw we conquered and got lost!

“The longest and toughest ride I’ve done to date, heavy rain in the morning and sunny to finish. Poor sign posting got us lost, missed our first pit stop, missed a loop of the route, and sent us off course on some unnecessary hill climbs… all adding to the ‘fun’. We ended up finishing on 69 miles rather than the 79 planned and did 7371ft climb instead of the 5740ft planned.

“I wish I had some heroic story on raising money for WaterAid and how dedicated I am, but I won’t lie, Andrew sent me the comms a week before and I joined. I did one ‘panic prep’ ride four days before and went for it. I am really looking forward to attempting 111 miles next year!”

Andrew said: “

“We raised almost £2,000 through the Just Giving page. The cycle challenge for Water Aid is something I have tried to enter an event nearly every year-next one is the Great North Run in October 2022.

“We met a nice lady in settle when we were unsure where to go and she pointed us in the direction of a ‘right big hill’. -The description fitted perfectly.

The ride was my longest ride to date, tough but enjoyable with outstanding views and scenery (one for the car on a Sunday afternoon).”

Well done to everyone involved, this is a fantastic effort for a great charity.
